As parents you dread the sick days for your little ones. Last thing you want to deal with is seeing them coming down with cold and feeling miserable. As much as you dread it, it is bound to happen as soon as it starts to get chilly outside. Cold and flu through viral infections are common in school during those days and there are high chances your child get exposed to the germs.
Don’t worry!!!! Here are some hacks that will help you take care of your child and shorten their sickness time. These tips are as helpful for adults as much for the kids.
Keep them home/ Get lots of rest
Majority of schools advise parents to keep their children home when they are sick. It is not only good for your child to stay home and get plenty of rest but also important to not expose other kids to germs. Children are usually contagious during first two days of sickness. Tuck them under the blanket and give them lots of love.
Serve them warm beef broth or chicken soup. Ginger, lemon and honey tea also beneficial recover and recoup faster. These warm drinks help a lot with decongestion.
Take out the Cold and Flu kit
Keep your family moving the day anyone of you comes down with a cold/flu. Having a ‘cold and flu kit’ is essential as soon as chilly weather starts. You can assemble one by gathering all the essentials you need at one spot. It could be a small tray or a basket. The kit should include kids medicine they are taking, supplements, disinfectants, hand sanitizer and wipes to wipe their little noses and hands. Take out your cold and flu kit and put it on the kitchen counter, so mommy doesn’t have to go and find each item when needed. It will save you a lot of time and energy while you take care of your little one.
Support their Immune System
Before the sneezing starts, strengthen their immune system using the following supplements. Generally, these immune supporting supplements should be used on regular basis. But if you already are not using these, act fast as soon as you notice the onset of symptoms. Vitamin C: Vitamin C is an amazing immune booster. It can shorten the sickness time and help your child heal and recover faster. You can get chewable ones from the pharmacy. I use Organic Camu Camu Powder mixed with a little orange juice. Camu Camu is the richest source of Vitamin C on the planet. It has made a huge difference for us and it’s my go-to vitamin C supplement. Mix it with their chocolate milk or an ounce of orange juice and it will do wonders.
Zinc: Zinc is highly affective in preventing and treating the common cold. Children who are given zinc on regular basis have shown to get less sick during the school year. Make sure to add Zinc to their daily supplement routine or up the dose during sick days.
Elderberry: Elderberry is one of the top antiviral herbs on the planet. For children, it comes in chewable, gummy and liquid drop forms. You may choose whichever works for your child. If started 48 hours within the onset of the symptoms, it will reduce the sickness time to half. I love Zarbees Natural for my kids. They can easily chew it and love the flavor too.
When its chilly out there and heaters are on inside, the nasal passages are bound to get dry. Especially when your little one has a cold; the dried nasal passage is more prone to get irritated and inflamed. This causes the problem of excessive mucus. Humidifier solves this problem by adding moisture to the indoor air and creates optimal breathing conditions.
No one sleeps in the house if your child has a stuffy nose and cough. Rub some chest rub on the chest and the bottom of their feet. It will help ensure a smooth night for everyone.
Use Disinfectants and Wash Hands Frequently
It is essential for kids to not only wash their hands a lot,but to also wash them well. Supervise them during the time they wash their hands.
Use separate towels, utensils, plates and cups. If you can, sanitize points of contact that are frequently touched. This includes door and cabinet knobs, remote, phone etc.
Clorox and Lysol are your best friends.
Open their nasal pathways by giving them a warm detox bath. Steam is going to loosen up all the yucky stuff inside their noses and help them breathe better. Adding Epsom salt help detox all the horrible toxins through their skin pores. Magnesium in Epsom salt relaxes their muscles and help with body pains. The detoxification process is going to help their liver and other organs work at their best.
